![]() ![]() Despite two guitars and a bass onstage (as well as a couple of trumpets) the music is often drum-lead with Mark Boardman setting a powerful driving structure. Vocally and lyrically it's something in the style of Blur, or Gorillaz without the electronics. Sound-wise, there are elements of The Cure, The Smiths, The Jam. And they show no lack of experience on stage, they are comfortable and professional. ![]() They aren't strangers to a live stage having played a number of gigs closer to home under their own name or secret appearances. The band is accomplished, they play impressively well. Even the new and newer songs (there were two or three which are yet to be formally released) were greeted with passionate screams and applause by the enthralled crowd. When Lovejoy took the stage the crowd erupted - and from start to finish they were bouncing around and shouting every word to every track. Alice Lily () were great fun and really talented while Spill created intriguing musical soundscapes with some clever effects - well worth checking them both out. Support for the night was provided by a couple of bands who definitely deserve their own headline slots. They love Lovejoy and they couldn't wait for the band to take to the stage. The atmosphere was electric from the start. It was hot, it was sweaty and no-one cared. I crammed into the Globe in Cardiff along with 300 loyal Lovejoy fans. This band has something, they're good - better than any band has a right to be at this stage in their career. Lead singer Wilbur Soot has a massive following thanks to his streaming success - both in the gaming/storytelling arena (most significantly as part of the Minecraft-based DreamSMP) and as a solo singer-songwriter in his own right.īut Lovejoy's nascent success is genuinely down to more than that. The rapid rise of Lovejoy isn't hard to explain. So much so that for this - their first 'proper' tour, tickets sold out within seconds.Īnd the venues are not insignificant, each holds several hundred people and plays host to familiar-name`bands. Lovejoy is an achingly new band, with less than 18 months under their belts since the release of the first EP in March 2021 - but already they have a huge base of deeply loyal fans. ![]()
